    • Day of Honor - 2012
I am a member of the board for "The Friends of Chief Plenty Coups State Park Association".  Every year the Saturday during Labor Day weekend we help put on Chief Plenty Coups Day of Honor. This year was our 20th Anniversary of the event and our theme was “Hoof Prints and Heartbeats”.  One of the day's highlight is the buffalo feast that is held toward the end of the day.

This summer I was working with Jennifer Flat Lip and she suggested putting together pictures from each of the reservations for people to see the differences and similarities of the horse culture in Montana.  Jennifer is pointing to the Crow reservation and picture of Crow children.  After she came up with the idea, I texted a friend and asked, "How do we hang photos in a tipi?"  Miriam texted "twine" and I came up with alligator clips.

The pictures selected were all taken during the late 1800's to early 1900's. They represent many of the tribes and reservations in Montana. I then put together a lesson that dealt with photo analysis, and could be completed independently by participants.
This lesson met Essential Understanding #1 for Indian Education for All.  http://www.montanatribes.org/files/7EssUnd-Summary.pdf

I took a map of Montana that shows the Montana reservations.  I identified each picture by tribe and posted it near that reservation. When I used the lesson with my younger students I provided greater scaffolding.  The lesson that is posted reflects those changes.  (Washington Elementary School is fortunate to have a tipi in our courtyard.  So I was able to hang the pictures there.)
